What to look for in a finished install.

At a glance, finished work all photographs about the same. The difference between a careful install and a fast one turns up in four places, and they are the same four places on our work as on anybody else’s.

Do this with every photo on this page. Then go do it with the other guy’s.

  • Sight down the top rail. From one end, a good run reads as a single line. A fence that was chased instead of laid out shows small corrections every few panels.
  • Look at the gap around the gate. It should be the same at the top as at the bottom. A gate that is wider at the top has already begun to sag.
  • Find the board ends on a deck. Square cuts landing in line, covered by the border board. That trim is only ever as good as the cuts underneath it.
  • Check the stairs. The same rise on every step and the same overhang on every tread. Stairs are where a deck either matches itself or does not.
