What Oglesby asks

An Oglesby rear yard that backs onto an alley is held to the front yard rule.

Section 14.06.120 of the land development code sets height and opacity by which yard the fence is in, and in April 2023 the city amended the table in a way that catches a lot of older lots. A front yard, a corner side yard, and now also a rear yard where that rear yard abuts an alley, are all held to four feet and no more than half opaque. A solid privacy panel is not an option in any of the three, no matter how short it is. An interior side yard goes to six feet and may be solid. A rear yard that does not back onto an alley goes to eight. Alleys run behind a great many blocks around here, so check what is behind you before you price a solid fence.

The other Oglesby rule worth knowing early is the boundary one. Ordinarily a fence keeps eighteen inches of clearance from any property line. Getting onto the line itself is not a conversation, it is a document: the building inspector has to be handed a written division fence agreement already recorded with the LaSalle County Recorder of Deeds, and the code dictates what has to be in it. Who owns the fence, who is obliged to maintain it, whether either of you may step onto the other's land to do that, what happens if one of you does not, how long the arrangement lasts and how the fence comes out at the end. It binds whoever owns the two lots next, not only the two of you, so it is a recorded instrument on the title rather than a handshake. Start it well before anyone works out post spacing.

The approval stays in your name. We do not pull permits and we will not tell you we did. Once you have the green light, the build is ours: materials, scheduling, installation, and cleanup.

Oglesby questions.

Do you actually work in Oglesby?

Yes. Oglesby is in LaSalle County, one of the five counties we cover from Spring Valley. It is about 7.6 miles east of the shop.

How soon can you get out to look at an Oglesby job?

Call 815-579-2323 and we will book a consultation. At about 7.6 miles we are close enough to come look, and close enough to come back if something needs a second visit. You get a straight answer on scope and timing, with no pitch and no pressure.

Will a fence you build in Oglesby hold up to an Illinois winter?

We set fence posts below the frost line. That is the part nobody sees, and it is the reason a shallow-set fence starts leaning by year three: frozen ground lifts the post and never sets it back down. It is a fair thing to ask anyone quoting you a fence in Oglesby.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Oglesby?

Yes. Fences are on the city's own published list of improvements that need a building permit. Section 14.06.120 then decides what you may build. A fence sits no closer than eighteen inches to a property line unless you and your neighbor record a division fence agreement with the LaSalle County Recorder of Deeds and hand the building inspector a copy, and that agreement binds later owners of both lots. Height runs by yard, and since an April 2023 amendment a rear yard that abuts an alley is held to the same four feet and no more than half opaque as a front yard, rather than the eight feet a rear yard otherwise gets. Chain link is allowed everywhere except a front or corner side yard, and barbed wire, razor wire and electrified fencing are prohibited. Ask at Oglesby City Hall, 110 E Walnut Street. The approval stays in your name. We do not pull permits and we will not tell you we did. Once you have the green light, the build is ours: materials, scheduling, installation, and cleanup.
